When I first arrived in New Orleans I had no expectations. I had never been to the South. I head there was still a lot of racism in the South and that New Orleans can be a dangerous city. However, New Orleans turned out to be a great city! The people are very nice and kind and always willing to help you or to have a chat. I live close to Magazine Street, which is full of bars and restaurants and cute little shops. There are always lots of people and I never feel unsafe. More uptown, in the French Quarter, you will find the typical New Orleans buildings and streets, full of street musicians. There is music everywhere. New Orleans does not really have the clubs that I am used to in Europe. However, it has great bars with live bands playing jazz music, which I think is way better than the normal clubs we go to in Europe on a night out. New Orleans has a lot of jazz festivals throughout the year, so there are plenty of opportunities to experience some real live jazz music! Also outside New Orleans, there are lots of beautiful places to go. I did a swamp tour on a boat and it was great. Louisiana has beautiful nature with lots of wildlife. I saw many alligators while on the swamp tour, but also raccoons and many other animals. I also did a few plantation tours. The experience was beautiful and horrific at the same time. The areas where these plantations are located, as well as the mansions themselves, are very beautiful, but of course the stories of the slaves who lived there are horrific. It was very interesting though and I would recommend anyone to go and visit these plantations. The Whitney Plantation tour has been the best experience so far, as it details the slaves' stories. Louisiana also has some great woods and forests. Last weekend I went on a camping tour in the forest. We went to a very basic camping place in the middle of the forest and watched the sky full of stars at night. It was beautiful. The next day we did a hiking trip in the forest and saw some great waterfalls. Louisiana, and especially New Orleans, is an absolute great place to stay for a couple of months. I am very happy and thankful that Amicus placed me here!
