Pro Bono Week 2008

In recognition of their International Pro bono work with Amicus a number of Amicus Lawyers were invited as Pro Bono Heros to the Attorney General's Reception at the Houses of Parliament.

Julian Killingly, Mark George, Randall Coyne, Nicholas Trenticosta and Susana Herrero were all named Pro Bono Heros.

Nick Trenticosta and Susana Herrero from the Equal Justice Center, New Orleans with the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland.

Julian Killingly, Amicus Patron and professor at Birmingham City University and Randall Coyne, Amicus Journal Editor and professor at Oklahoma University with the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland.

During Pro Bono Week 2008 Amicus held a series of talks that were well attended accross the country.

In February 2006, Juan Melendez visited from the USA. Juan spent 17 years, 8 months and 1 day on Florida's Death Row before having his conviction thrown out when evidence pointing to the real killer was discovered. During his two-day trip, Juan spoke with hundreds of people in London, Oxford and Manchester at events arranged by Amicus in conjunction with local groups.

Between September and February 2006, Amicus also arranged film screenings, intern talks and introductory events in Oxford and Manchester.

Amicus also arranges intern talks, speaker events, intern reunions and introductory days nationally. Amicus members always hear about the events that we arrange in advance of the general public (members of regional group mailing lists will always hear about such events but usually later than members of Amicus).

In November 2007, Amicus held LIME, a dinner-dance raising vital funds for the charity, which was attended by Sister Helen Prejean. Sister Helen has already confirmed that she wants to come to our next LIME event, which is looking likely to be in early 2010. Please contact us if you want to be told about tickets for this event.

The charity is designed to assist in the provision of legal representation for those awaiting capital trial and punishment in the US.
