US Death Penalty Training
Our US Death Penalty training course runs twice a year in March and October. The course is hosted by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in London and is accredited for 21 CPD points/hours with the Law Society and the Bar Council.
Regular speakers at our course include Mark George QC, from Garden Court North Chambers in Manchester, and Professor Julian Killingley, who is Director of the Centre for American Legal Studies at Birmingham City University.
Introductory Evening:
The training course always kicks off with an inspirational session on the Friday evening, the highlight of which is the chance to hear from a former death row inmate. There is also the opportunity for participants to get to know each other and chat to former interns about their experiences.
Theoretical Weekend:
The first weekend covers various aspects of US capital law, including jury selection, the trial and appeals process, the US constitution and applications to the US Supreme Court. It also looks at relevant areas of international law.
Practical Weekend:
The second weekend introduces some of practical skills required for capital work, including interview techniques, investigation skills and US legal research.
