We are offering three separate UK placements at the moment: Office, Data specific and Social Media specific placements. Find further details on each below, noting their different criteria and time requirements.
We are looking for individuals over the age of 18 who are responsible, motivated and able to work on their own initiative. The ideal candidates will also be flexible, able to work as part of a small team and keen to gain experience in the legal/human rights/criminal law fields.
Please note: For all placements, membership of Amicus is required.
Office Volunteer
Job Description
We offer volunteer placements with our UK office, which requires a minimum time commitment of 14 hours per week (across two days, Monday-Friday) for 3 months. Placements are largely remote, with the option to attend our in person office once a week (this is not compulsory). Those shortlisted at the paper stage will be invited to a test and, if shortlisted at test stage, to an interview. Successful applicants will be offered placements which cover both office and casework tasks.
Key Tasks:
- Sending out correspondence, communicating with members and handling general queries
- Assisting with the administration and completion of casework on death penalty and juvenile cases, and our three major empirical studies
- Organising online files for US and UK-based casework teams
- General death penalty research and tracking upcoming executions
- Editing and writing articles for the newsletter and journal
- Helping to prepare content for our social media accounts and keeping the website updated
- Assisting with the planning and preparation of events, including biannual death penalty training
- Additional ad hoc tasks as required

- An interest in charities, human rights and law preferred
- Previous social media/design experience in a professional capacity preferred
Time commitment:
Volunteers are required to commit to 14 hours per week (across 2 days, Mon-Friday, 10am-6pm) for 3 months. At the moment this is from mid-August 2024 to mid-November 2024.

Social Media Volunteer
Job Description
Your role will be to assist our Social Media Manager to fulfil human rights and death penalty research tasks and design social media content for Amicus.
Key Tasks:
- Preparing social media posts for all of our platforms: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn
- Research death penalty topics to create posts about
- Keeping up to date with scheduled executions in the US and outcomes of upcoming court hearings in death penalty cases
- Assistance with preparation of content for our monthly newsletter
- Helping to keep our social media accounts and our website updated
- Preparing promotional content for our events
- Additional ad hoc tasks as required

Data-Specific Volunteer
Job Description
Your role will be to handle and process large amounts of data for one of our empirical studies, using tools like Microsoft Excel and Salesforce. Our empirical studies look at how the death penalty is being used across the US, and typically how unconstitutionally it is being applied in practice.
Key Tasks:
- Creating and updating our databases efficiently and accurately
- Creating and using mailing lists and membership databases
- Organising electronic filing systems
- Contacting members
- Processing documents
- Additional ad hoc tasks as required
